HUMANITAS MAXIMUS ARTICLES

You should read the fine print which follows first...

*Note to my Readers About Viewing Posts: This blog is formatted in such a manner as to cut off certain of the larger graphics that appear in the postings -- especially when those postings have been excerpted from wider-screen or higher-resolution media. Please be patient with me while I work within Google's somewhat stifling Blogger framework. If some graphics are cut off, you might just left-click on them to see if you can get an original source screen with the full graphic shown -- regrettably, this only works some of the time. In the event that any of the wording is cut off, you might change your screen magnification down from 100% to 75%. But don't worry -- the copy very seldom gets cut off. In some cases, if the article has been re-posted from another source (and you sadly can almost never tell you might try clicking on the article title, to get redirected to the original source posting, which will generally be full-sized and easy to read. No matter what...Please don't run out to the local drugstore in the rain and buy some of those overpriced non-prescription "reading glasses" that will make you look like either 1) a Senator in a subcommittee proceeding, or like 2) a substitute teacher from the early 1060's.

And now, intrepid explorers...TO INFINITY! AND BEYOND!

TRUTH BY CONSENSUS: "Estimating" the Truth

Every so often, a philosophical issue or a Human Behavioral issue becomes either a social lightning rod, catalyst or synchronous force for social change. We cannot think without being a bit philosophical, just as we cannot achieve great things in this vast world of possibilities without navigating our way through the realities of the Laws of Physics and of Physiology.

We often change our minds about things which we had been fairly certain about as new information becomes available. Often, e are convinved by others in positions of power and credibility of what the truth is. Many of us will wantonly refuse to listen to facts because the conclusions where they would lead us could hurt us deeply -- we then deny things to spare ourselves the pain of this somber revelations. A variation on this theme is to be selective with our information, so that we only "find" facts which support our preferred beliefs.

While telling a lie repeatedly and with great passion does not make it become the truth, it can, via the mechanism of the self-fulfilling prophesy, become the future truth.

Can we find a meaningful and useful approximation of the preceived truth by a data collection, weighting and analytic approach. I believe that we can.

While this does not give us the truth, it gives us a "popularly perceived truth" which might give us something useful for the purposes of discussions and decisionmaking.

Have you taken a look at http://twitlik.com/PDDS? You might see how informational overload can lead to bad choices, or to simple indecision.

For global peace and prosperity, I am all in favor of finding at least some rudimentary tools which can bring us closer to a point of agreement. Perhaps an estimate of people's perceptions of the truth is a starting point. Please let me know your thoughts.

Dear Friends:

Q: is there an absolute truth?
Q: is the notion of "one truth" a myth?
Q: can the truth be arrived at by observation?
Q: can the truth be arrived at by concensus?
Q: can two separate truths co-exist, without each invalidating or negating the other?

Truth is a tough subject, indeed.

Here are is a reprint of a post to http://aboutdouglascastle.blogspot.com/ about the notion of at least "agreeing, via an organized and accepted practice, upon the truth. I smilingly call this the Estimated Truth. Please read on...

A FORMULA FOR "ESTIMATING" THE TRUTH...

Douglas Castle is in the process of developing a scientific mechanism for collecting, evaluating and weighing the subjective (and varied) perceptions of the same situation by a group of individuals to compute the best "estimate" of the actual truth.

This is a daunting but necessary challenge. People only report their perceptions of reality, and not of reality, itself. If there is, in fact, no concrete or absolute reality or truth, it would still be useful to have a means of collecting subjective data from groups of significant statistical size and and distilling the most likely truth.

The applications of this process would include market research, news reporting, conflict resolution, creating optimized definitions and strategic planning.

The disciplines involved in developing this model would entail applications of statistics, probability, and test design. There would be, of necessity, experimentation and trial-and-error -- but I believe that the resulting formula and the data generated through its proper and consistent utilization would be highly worthwhile.

Lastly, the value of this particular measurement (i.e., the outcome of the process) would be incalculable. It would at very least provide us with a form of "perception by conscensus," if not the elusive truth, itself. The mind boggles at the number of "working definitions" which could be created via a simple data collection and concensus approach.

Of course, being a lingovator and megalomaniac of some note, I would propose to call this formula the "CASTLE PERCEPTUAL CONCENSUS PROTOCOL," and the resultant statistic the "CASTLE COLLECTIVIZED PERCEPTION," or, more simply, the "CCP VALUE."

Wouldn't it be a fascination to use this approach, when duly-refined, to find CCP VALUES or CCP DEFINITIONS for such things as:

  • Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Competence
  • Integrity
  • Validity
  • Quality...
The potential list would be endless.

Think about it, please, so perhaps I won't have to.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

CAPITAL CRIMES!

CAPITAL CRIMES!

Dear Friends:

I use capitalization, boldface, italics, wacky fonts, contrived emoticons, profanity, pictures and multiple colors in order to get attention, and to break up the monotony of my occasionally boring style. People have ostracized me in the past for this practice, but they have gotten accustomed to it and have become undstanding and forgiving. Apparently, there are simply not enough problems associated with managing companies in a challenging economy and a changing culture, and one company actually fired an employee for a Capital Offense -- or, more aptly, for a Capitalization Offense. As it turns out, the terminated employee took this firing to court and won a decision in her favor to return to her job. Huzzah! Aren't there enough impediments to overcome on the way to prosperity and peace without our wasting our precious time looking for more behaviors to categorize as "politically incorrect" or "criminal"? Are we becoming so obsessed with control of others that we are actually discouraging originality, individuality and the creative process? My theory is that if spend too much time on compliance, you will (literally) never have a moment to think or do anything else...Why be so petty?

Please give this some thought. I appreciate good manners as well as the next Neanderthal, but is this rush to conformity contributing to the destruction of innovation and free speech? Hmmm... I'd like to know your thoughts.
