Dear Friends:

People are very fond of endorsements. They used to be satisfied to buy a product that was merely credibility-enhanced with the qualifier "AS SEEN ON TV!".

In these times, it's more direct:
  • As recommended on OPRAH.
  • Obama wants you to buy a new home.
  • Obama wants you to go back to school.
  • Kelly Ripa's Skin Secret!
  • What the AMA doesn't want you to know!
These endorsements are, more often than not, just advertising come-ons. In many cases, the celebrities' names are being used without their knowledge or permission. Even more crushing... (gasp!) -  the celebrities or institutions being spotlighted might never have said any such thing, read any such thing, thought any such thing, recommended any such thing or used any such product.

The only endorsements that really get my attention are the ones from neighbors and friends who come flailing and raving, shouting, "You won't believe it! This **** really works!"

I don't usually like to endorse anything, except checks. and even then, only sometimes.
